Dog Fact of the Day: The dewclaw
A dog’s 5th toe is located up its leg and is called a “dewclaw”. There is debate over the removal of the dewclaw, but it does have its uses. Dogs can use it to hold toys, bones etc but it is also used to help dogs climb trees (some breeds can climb as well as cats!). Why would a dog climb a tree? Some hunting breeds used it to go after their prey.
Like all toenails, don’t forget to clip the dewclaw! As it doesn’t get as much (if any) wear, it can snag if unattended.
