Dog Fact: Tilting Heads
I always love when dogs tilt their heads as it seems like they are actually understanding the conversation you're having with them (everyone does this, just admit it). Above is a video I shot to demonstrate the head tilt with Penny, one of my "waggers". I've found a couple reasons below why they do this, but I'll just go on continuing to believe that they pondering a witty reply.
1. They do it to hear better. If your dogs tilts its head when it hears a sound or while you’re talking to it, it’s trying to absorb the sound better or trying to understand you. This is a sign of intelligence.
2. This behaviour has been positively reinforced. You probably find it cute when your dog tilts his head. We reward this behaviour by speaking in a soothing voice, saying things like “awww buddy you’re so cute" and petting him.
